Colt Single Action Army U.S. Cavalry series in Prime Custer Range, serial #5848. A 3-page Kopec letter accompanies this “Custer Colt” which we will summarize as follows: 1. The Revolver falls between 5846 An Indian turn in and 5843 A Cavalry Revolver from the Crow Agency. 2. Kopec states, lot six from which 7th Cav. Revolvers drawn. 3. Subject Revolver shows a Colt 1860 backstrap and altered grips with unnumbered trigger guard. 4. The Revolver has been professionally refinished. 5. Hammer Roller missing. 6. Toe of grip repaired. 7. Firing pin replaced. 8. Barrel address buffed off when refinished. 9. Barrel stud modified or replaced. 10. Base pin replaced. 11. Front sight reduced. 12. Cylinder is spare parts replacement R.S.C. never numbered. In his text Mr. Kopec states that the grip modification was done by one of the ordinance departments armories. The revolver remains in fine to excellent condition as refurbished with 95-98% old arsenal type reblue. The action is tight, the bore fair to good. The grips good as repaired on left toe. This cataloger agrees with all Mr. Kopec’s 3-page letter which a copy will be available for potential buyers. In addition it is known from the research of John S. duMont (for which I was a custodian and read completely) that the firearms and in particular the pistols which were captured by the Indian Insurgents at the Battle of the Little Big Horn were recaptured, turned in at Indian Reservations or retrieved in any way found their way to national Armories. Rock Island Arsenal received a number of guns captured right after the battle. Many of these arms were rebuilt, reissued or cannibalized for parts in the Spanish American War Era. Also Rock Island Arsenal sold as surplus at least 2-1866 Winchesters and other arms recaptured from Hostiles of the Little Big horn shortly after the turn of the Century. duMont knew of only 4 pistols between 5776-6123 when he wrote “Custer Battle Guns” and from his research he would have considered this a Prime Custer Range Colt.
