Colt Single Action Army U.S. 7th Cavalry period documented by serial #6559, one of three known which were "rendered unserviceable in action against the hostile Indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, M.T. on the 25th and 26th of June 1866". This revolver along with serial #5743 and #5773 were returned by Capt. F. W. Benteen of the 7th Cavalry to the Chief Ordinance Officer of Dakota, who we have quoted aboveand who recorded these three numbers. Refer "Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec and Fenn, page 267. The Colt shows mixed numbers and an old arsenal type blued finish, worn wood grips, early Ainsworthmarked cylinder, early ejector rod housing, P proof on barrel with early boss and stud; front sight has been trimmed slightly, grips are well worn, some markings are light due to old refinish. Only a handful of perioddocumented veterans of the Little Big Horn Battle are known, and this is the first single action authenticated by the Ordinance Dept. we know to ever be offered for sale on the auction market.
