Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Scarce Long Flute Cylinder

Estimate: $6500 - 9000
Manufactured in 1915, this is an example of one of the 1,478 Single Action Army Revolvers assembled with surplus Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver cylinders with long flutes. The Model 1878 cylinders were modified by adding stop notches and approaches and altering the cylinder ratchet. In addition to the modified Model 1878 cylinder, Long Flute Single Action Army Revolvers were finished with a higher polish on blued parts which resulted in a "fire blue" finish not found on other Colt SAA revolvers manufactured between 1913-15. The frame and loading gate have a casehardened finish with the remaining metal surfaces having the distinctive fire blue finish. The top of the barrel has the one line Hartford address marking with the left rear side marked "45 COLT". The left side of the frame has the two line, three patent dates marking along with a Rampant Colt. The left side of the trigger guard has the Colt triangle proof and a "1" assembler's mark. A "P" is stamped in the hammer slot above the firing pin hole. Matching numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap with the assembly number "128" on the loading gate. The revolver is fitted with checkered hard rubber grips featuring the Federal eagle at the bottom and Rampant Colt inside an oval at the top.
