Colt SAA revolver, Sheriff’s Model, 44-40 cal., factory 4” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, one piece varnished wood grips, #122385. The revolver remains in very good+ original condition showing its entire etched panel, just going slightly light on a few letters and on the edges. The barrel retains 50%-70% original blue evenly toning and some brightening at the left front muzzle from being carried in a right hand holster. Some minor erosion and pin prick pitting just starting toward the front of the muzzle. The front sight has been reduced a very small amount. The cylinder shows 20%-30% original blue, mostly in the flutes. The frame shows approx. 20%-30% original case hardening within a silvery grey patina with traces of case hardening where protected and under good light is still visible. The back strap and trigger guard show 10%-20% blue in protected areas and a good remainder In patina. The varnished wood grips are good to very good with 50%-60% varnish thinning on the edges, some small nicks, mars, scratches and normal use. The hammer shows considerable original case hardening drifting to silver grey. The action is tight; the bore is very good+; all matching visible serial numbers. There are some initials lightly cut into the bottom of the butt strap that are not quite legible and there are some slight scratches on the bottom of the barrel. A very crisp and untouched original Sheriff’s Model Single Action with the highly desirable etched barrel and all features are confirmed by factory letter showing shipment to A.G. Spearth, Astoria, OR, Oct. 20, 1887, two guns in shipment and letter from Ron Graham, dated Oct. 16, 1998 on this revolver recorded as first made Sheriff’s Model in 44-40 cal., and also records only known complete visible etched panel on a Sheriff’s Model and only approx. 5 known etched panels survive in the Sheriff’s Model. A very important and rare Sheriff’s Model Single Action that is completely authentic. Est.: $50,000-$80,000.
