Colt SAA revolver, 7-1/2” etched panel, 44-40 cal., 7-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, checkered Colt eagle hard rubber grips, #106076 with documentation having been the side arm of Arapahoe County, Colorado Sheriff Michael Spangler (1879-1883) and including a J.P. Lower marked triple loop leather holster and an unmarked leather cartridge belt. A Xerox copy of a factory letter confirms all features and notes the gun was shipped to J.P. Lower & Sons on September 18, 1885 in a group of 6 guns. An affidavit signed by Richard D. Taylor indicates he obtained the gun and holster rig of his Great Uncle, Michael Spangler who was the brother-in-law of his Grandfather, Dr. Hugh L. Taylor who was originally given the gun which then passed to Mr. Taylor’s father and then to him. After leaving the Sheriff’s position, Spangler became active in business affairs in the Denver area including the Vice Presidency of the Union Bank of Denver and in mining interests. He died in December, 1897 in a mining accident. Also included with this lot are Xerox copies of newspaper articles on Spangler showing his high regard in the community he served. The Colt is in overall excellent condition showing approx. 95% original finish with losses only on high points, muzzle from holster wear and backstrap from handling; all matching visible serial numbers; fine bore, crisp action and markings; excellent grips. The etched panel on the left side of the barrel is fully visible; the holster rig is in overall very good condition and the J.P. Lower marking is clear and located on the bottom of the holster skirt. A truly great Western Lawman’s rig with factory confirmed features and excellent overall condition. Est.: $15,000-$20,000.
