Colt SAA revolver, .45 cal., 4 3/4” barrel, factory style deluxe engraved in the hand of Cuno Helfricht; nickel and gold-plated, incised carved pearl grips, #157681. This outstanding black powder Single Action revolver retains approx. 75%-85% of its original soft nickel finish that is completely unpolished; showing some areas of flaking at the muzzle and sides of the cylinder and areas of darkening where the nickel has lifted and some beginning light to moderate erosion and pin prick pitting in these areas. The cylinder shows most of its original darkened finish with gold plating in the flutes of which 60%-70% remains and this is the only gold flute and silver plated tri-color finish Single Action currently known to sophisticated collectors. The edges are crisp; the markings are sharp; the grips are beautifully period incised carved in a delicate floral motif on both sides. The grips are in very good+ condition showing some small losses at the edges. The front sight is its full height; the action is crisp; the bore is very good+. There is no factory record on the engraving of this rare black powder Colt revolver and it was probably a factory presentation or display piece as many of these were not recorded on the factory ledgers. A research letter by noted Colt expert, R.L. Wilson, is included who attributes the engraving to Cuno Helfricht which is a statement with which we agree. An interesting and completely authentic untouched original-to-the-19th century black powder Single Action. Est.: $60,000-$120,000.
