Colt Single Action Army U.S. Cavalry Issue Revolver, #386, .45 cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, smooth walnut grips with New York Militia markings, pictured on page 15 of ''Firearms in the Custer Battle'', by John E. Parsons and John S. DuMont, c. 1953. This pistol started out as an Ainsworth inspected U.S. Cavalry Model 1873 Single Action revolver, and is documented as being originally issued to Co. B 1st U.S. Cavalry, as listed on Page 24 of ''Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers'', by Kopec & Fenn. There are 140 New York Militia revolvers represented within this group of Ainsworth revolvers and were recalled during the 1893 recall. Condition is very good to fine retaining 70%-80% original factory military blue finish on barrel, ejector rod and straps, with even thinning and toning overall. Cylinder shows 20%-30% blue mostly in flutes. Barrel with correct matching number with early correct italic barrel address. Frame has 40%-50% muted case hardeni!
ng drifting to silver with faintly visible hues. Grips are military replacements with New York markings and number on the right side. Hammer is full blued militia type. There are slight crosshatch markings on the rear of frame and bottom rear of triggerguard which extend into the grips. Action is tight, bore is fine to near excellent. A very early and interesting Single Action maintaining all early features. One of 800 refurbished by Colt in 1895 for the New York State Militia after serving in the Indian Wars. Est.: $18,000-$22,000.
