Colt SAA Cal .38-40 SN:165400 Revolver with 7 1/2" barrel, with documentation to ownership by Edwin Tewksbury, who was involved in the Graham-Tewksbury Feud, also known as the "Pleasant Valley War". A notarized affidavit signed by Nellie Cameron Nee Bohse, states that she was born in Globe, Arizona, in 1900 and her father Gustave was an Arizona pioneer. She further states her father traded a horse for this pistol about the year 1900 from Edwin Tewksbury. She mentions the seven notches and the gun being in her possession about 57 year (in 1967). This notarized document from Gila county Arizona, is dated 14 December 1967 and transfers ownership to Jess G Hayes of Globe. A 1968 dated document transfers ownership from Hayes to noted Arizona collector Jimmie Peers of Tucson. An Arizona Republic newspaper article dated February 12, 1968 features this gun in an article by Wade Cavanaugh, where Hayes is shown holding the aforementioned Colt. The article tells the story of the bloody feud memorialized in this article and quotes "The gun will never leave Arizona", in the words of Jesse Hayes. The Graham-Tewksbury feud was a range war immortalized in the territorial history of Arizona which is featured in a litany of books, magazine articles, and movies on this subject. Edwin Tewksbury was the main "player". The pistol shows traces of original blue and case hardening with good markings and good grips. The bottom left grip is cut with seven small "kill" notches. The action is good, bore good. Backstrap is engraved "Edwin T. Tewksbury" in fancy script. An important relic of Arizona history.
