Colt Root side hammer spur trigger revolver, .28 cal., 3-1/2” octagon barrel, nickel finish, wood grips, #2897; backstrap period inscribed “J.W. Wheeler”. This gun shows an old frosty re-nickel of which approx. 96%remains, considerable cylinder scene, matching serial numbers, very good action, bore, markings and very good grips with a small loss to the rear right toe. In our opinion, this inscription is period but there is no documentation accompanying this piece from the consignor’s estate; it is accompanied by a relined wood casing with cap tin, brass bullet mold and powder flask that is old (circa 1870s-1880’s) but later thanthis gun and with a plaque on the lid “Lt. Gen. J. Wheeler, C.S.A.”. Further research of this gun in older gun catalogs and magazines may provide further information on this piece; if provable to “Fighting Joe”Wheeler, its value would be greatly increased. Est.: $1,500-$2,500.
