This is a fine example of a Colt Model 1860 Army Richards Conversion revolver with scarce 12-slot cylinder. The revolver has a retailer applied nickel-plated finish and period checkered, one-piece walnut grip. The serial number, "1548" is in the correct 1000-1700 range for 12 slot cylinder revolvers. The revolver has the distinctive Richards conversion features that include: (1) fine cross-hatched ejector rod head, (2) bordered cross hatching on the hammer spur, (3) internal loading gate spring, (4) externally numbered conversion ring and loading gate and (5) converted percussion cylinder. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-".The left side of the frame has the two-line "COLTS/PATENT" marking and the left side of the trigger guard is stamped "44 CAL". The cylinder is roll stamped with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT". The full serial number, "1548" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "548". All of the visible serial numbers match. The conversion ring and loading gate are stamped with the external assembly number "278".

Very good. The revolver has minimal handling wear and retains approximately 85% of the retailer applied nickel-plated finish. The barrel, frame and cylinder have scattered flaking and minor handling marks. The hammer retains about 80% of the original casehardened finish. The cylinder has 95% or more of the naval battle scene. All of the markings are crisp. The period checkered grip is in very good condition. The action is crisp and functions fine. This is an attractive example of a scarce 12-Slot Richards Conversion .
