Colt New Model Pocket Breechloader, #95, .38 RF cal., 4-1/2'' octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, silver-plated backstrap and triggerguard, and known by collectors as the Type 3 octagonal modified Pocket Model of Navy caliber, with gate. These revolvers were newly made only and not converted, thus, the early low serial number. It was found that the '62 Police barrels required a fair amount of machining to change their profile and groove them for the ejector housing. It was much easier to make minimal changes to a Pocket Navy barrel. This particular modifications to this pistol date it from mid-1872. Condition is near fine retaining approx. 60% thinning and flaking blue to barrel assembly, 30% blue to cylinder, vivid original case colors to frame and hammer, silver in the most protected areas of backstrap, approx. 25% silver to triggerguard. Fire blue screws and trigger show somewhat brilliant thinning hues. Grips with very light scuffs at highpoint of sides near butt, and minor impressions from handling. Loading gate spring and screw are present, however loading gate has been separated from pistol long ago. Action is crisp, bore is mirror bright. An excellent old revolver needing minor work and showing very little use. All visible parts match; wedge appears to be correct and original but is unmarked. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
