This example was originally manufactured in 1870 and was later converted to a .38 centerfire cartridge between 1873 and 1875. The replacement barrel is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." and has the matching serial number. The cylinder has the stagecoach holdup roll engraving scene and has the matching serial number. The wedge is unnumbered. The cylinder pin has the matching serial number. The left side of the frame is marked "-PAT. JULY. 25. 1871-/PAT. JULY. 2. 1872.-". The left side of the trigger guard is marked "31 CAL" and is marked with the matching serial number. The back strap is also marked with the matching serial number. The hammer has been converted from percussion to centerfire. Fitted with a smooth walnut one-piece grip.

Condition:
Fine, 60% of the nickel remains on the barrel, cylinder and frame with the balance a mottled silvery gray patina. The cylinder retains much of the roll engraving. The grip straps retain 30% silver with an attractive patina on the brass. The grip is fine with some scratches and dings. Much of the varnish remains. Mechanically fine.
