Colt Model 1883 fanciest grade Double Barrel hammerless shotgun, engraved with panel scenes, 12 gauge, 29” damascus patterned barrels, S/N 6276, double triggers, deluxe checkered wood stock and forend, Rampant Colt checkered hard rubber butt plate. This gun is in overall very good to near fine condition showing a light grey patina to metal surfaces, dog and game bird scenes of either side of the frame, game bird scene on bottom of trigger guard; very good to fine bores, one action is crisp; the other is not functioning and needs repair. The wood butt stock shows beautiful graining and fine checkering with a fleur d’ lis carved section on each side of the front end of the stock; checkered forend with ebony tip. Per Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms (5B-264), The Colt 1883 shotgun “ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade”. Manufactured between 1883 and 1895, only about 7,366 total were produced. NOTE: Colt ledgers are fairly complete on this Model; so it would be recommended the successful bidder send for a factory letter which may provide additional details on the gun and its recipient.
