Co. Hartford, Jan. 31, 1884”. This important factory presentation gun is in overall fine condition showing 98% original Damascus finish on the barrels, exceedingly fine engraving and three game panel scenes on the receiver; approx. 50% case colors on the receiver, fine bores, crisp action, finely grained deluxe wood stocks with delicately checkered fore stock and pistol grip; wood is fine overall with just scattered small scratches, nicks and impressions; steel butt plate. Accompanied by documentation including a factory letter that confirms all features as factory and that the gun was presented to Samuel Walker, one gun, date of presentation is January 31, 1884. Also included is an R.L. Wilson letter stating that he is confident the inscription and the engraving on the gun was accomplished by master Cuno A. Helfricht. He also summarized additional documentation accompanying this gun that indicates Samuel Walker immigrated from Scotland to America in 1852 and began employment at the Colt factory in 1861 and remained there until January, 1884 during which time he was the factory’s paymaster and supervisor of the Store Room where the factory Museum collection of firearms were kept. Wilson also notes there were only four such Model 1878 shotguns presented by the factory during the period of their production 1878-1889 (total of only 22,690 produced). An important Colt presentation in superb condition. From the Richard Wolfe Collection. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
