Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer 10 Gauge Shotgun
Manufactured in 1885, with a single brass bead front sight on a smooth concaved rib, which is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD. CT U.S.A." with a doll's head rib extension. The Damascus barrels feature 3 inch chambers and extractor. Casehardened side lock action marked "Colt's F.A. Mfg. Co." on both sides. The Damascus barrels are brown, the trigger guard was blue and remaining parts casehardened. The shotgun is mounted with a checkered splinter forearm with ebony forend and round knob pistol grip stock with an iron shotgun buttplate and silver initial oval on the bottom. The Model 1878 was regarded as one of the finest of all American made shotguns. Having problems competing with less expensive European models of the time, Colt ceased production after only 22,690 were made between 1878 and 1889.

Very good. The barrels retain approximately 50% of the faded original brown and Damascus pattern remaining. The break lever has strong traces of original blue finish remaining with the balance having a smooth gray patina. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina with some minor oxidation on the buttplate. The wood is fair with a number of small minor gouges on the forearm, dents, dings and scratches on the buttstock and heavy wear to the checkering. Mechanically fine.
