This is a beautiful original condition Colt Model 1877 Lighting double action revolver in a .38 caliber. The M1877 was designed by one of the inventor of the M1873 Colt Single Action, William Mason and was the first successful US made double-action cartridge revolver. The term "Lighting" was coined by Benjamin Kittredge, one of Colt's major distributors, and was never designated by Colt. The M1877 was the pistol of choice by both famous Old West outlaws John Wesley Hardin and Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty also known as William H. Bonney). The revolver is marked as such: left side barrel "COLT. D.A. 38", left side frame "PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871, " " . 5, "74, " JAN. 19, "75. (with the Rampant Colt circle logo)", top of barrel "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.", trigger and frame both marked, "137533", end of grip marked "137533". This revolver shows approximately 40%+ original finish and condition with original good condition rampant colt black grips. The piece has a six shot cylinder. Serial number 137553, manufactured in circa 1902. RARE piece. 4.5" round barrel.
