Colt Model 1871-72 Open-Top Single Action Revolver, #4918, .44 RF cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, factory one-piece walnut grips. As shipped to Shuyler, Hartley & Graham, New York City, NY, May 12, 1875, in a 24-gun shipment, with all features, except grips, verified by factory letter. Cylinder with Mexican War naval scene. Originally introduced in 1871, this was Colt's first attempt at a specifically designed revolver for use with metallic cartridges, as all previous metallic cartridge arms had been alterations of existing percussion arms. Approx. 7000 were produced before the introduction of the Single Action Army in 1873. Condition is about very good retaining only light traces of original finish in protected areas. Grips with even smoothing and oil darkening near metal surfaces. Revolver with some replaced screws. All visible matching numbers (wedge may have been renumbered to match at a later date). Action is good, bore is fair. Est.: $3,500-$5,000. (Antique)
