Colt Model 1871-1872 Open Top Single Action Revolver with Ivory Grip

Manufactured circa 1872-1873, this was one of approximately only 7,000 manufactured. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the hugely successful Colt Single Action Army revolver. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --" and the left side of the frame is marked with the two July 1871 and 1872 patent dates. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No "092" and the complete serial number "2092" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is numbered "1320". Blade front sight and the rear sight is an integral notch on the breech end of the barrel. Fitted with an outstanding original smooth ivory grip, steel Army-style grip frame and correct period retailer applied nickel finish. The finish is common for these as the "Colt Allies" such as J/P. Moore and Hartley & Graham employed their own platers.

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% of the nickel finish remaining showing some scattered minor flaking, some pin prick type pitting on the left side of the barrel and cylinder, some moderate pitting on the bottom of the trigger guard and on the bottom of the barrel along the edge of the ejector housing. There is some wear and a drag line on the cylinder. The cylinder scene is mostly visible. The markings are clear. The grip is excellent with some minor age stress lines present on the bottom, showing a very pleasant light aged patina in the grain. The action is excellent.
