Colt Model 1871-1872 Open Top Revolver
Produced circa 1872-1873, this was one of approximately 7,000 made. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the wildly successful Single Action Army. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --", the left side of the frame is marked with the two July 1871 and 1872 patent dates, the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No 3249" and the complete serial number "3249" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and wedge. The left side trigger guard shoulder is marked "44 CAL" and the loading gate is numbered "214". Blade front sight and the rear sight is a integral notch on the breech end of the barrel. Fitted with one piece varnished walnut grips and steel Navy-style grip frame with an all nickel finish.

Condition: Professionally restored to factory specifications, with 90% plus plated finish showing overall scattered minor flaking and "blistering" on the barrel and frame. The cylinder only has a couple of small areas of flaking and the scene strong. The grip is a professionally made replacement with most of the varnish remaining and a few scattered minor dings and dents. The remaining markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically very good.
