Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver
This very fine example of a Colt Model 1862 Police revolver was manufactured in 1861. The pistol has a high-polish, commercial blue barrel and five-shot, fluted cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver-plated trigger guard and backstrap. The one-piece, walnut grip has a high gloss, 'piano' finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in a single line. The cylinder is stamped: "PAT.SEPT.10th1850" in one flute. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. "36CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number, "4083" is stamped on the underside of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, wedge, cylinder arbor pin and the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 4 1/2 inch

Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: varnished walnut
Serial Number: 4083

Very fine. The pistol retains approximately 40% of the blue finish on the barrel and 60% on the cylinder with approximately 90% plus of the casehardened finish on the loading lever, frame and hammer. The case colors remain vivid. The trigger guard and backstrap retains approximately 95% of the original once cleaned silver-plated finish. The screw heads and trigger have most of the niter blue finish. The grip is in excellent condition with about 95% of the original varnish. The markings and serial numbers are crisp. The cylinder pins are battered but there is minimal flash pitting on the percussion nipples and the rear face of the cylinder. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very fine example of first year production Colt Model 1862 Police revolver.
