This is an example of a Colt Model 1862 Cartridge conversion revolver manufactured circa 1873-1875. The revolver is a Richards-Mason .38 rimfire conversion with round barrel and ejector and round cylinder. The revolver has a nickel plated finish and is fitted with an ivory grip. The barrel lug has a plugged loading lever hole and is fitted with a small frame Richards-Mason ejector housing. The face of the ejector head is stamped with concentric rings. The hammer is fitted with a rimfire firing pin and the spur has bordered knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped "PAT. JULY, 25, 1871./PAT, JULY, 2, 1972." in two lines. "36 CAL" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The full serial number, "5112" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "918". The back of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "106". The mis-matched cylinder and assembly numbers that do not match the serial number are occasionally found on round cylinder Model 1862 cartridge conversions.
