This is an example of a Colt Model 1862 Police revolver with Richards-Mason conversion that was manufactured circa.1873-1875. The revolver has a converted round percussion cylinder. The barrel has a plugged loading lever hole and the right side of lug is fitted with a small frame Richards-Mason ejector housing. The face of the ejector head has concentric rings. The hammer has a rimfire firing pin and spur with bordered knurling. The loading gate has an internal spring. The barrel is fitted with a high, brass pin front sight. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder. The conversion ring, loading gate hammer and frame have a case hardened finish. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver plated and the one-piece walnut grip has a high polish "piano" finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped with the original "COLTS/PATENT" marking found on early conversion revolvers. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT". "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The serial number, "3648" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "648". All of the visible serial numbers match. The back of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "3744".
