Manufactured as a percussion model this revolver was subsequently returned to the Colt factory to receive a cartridge conversion, which deleted the loading lever without filling the lever channel, bored the cylinder clean through, mounted a rimfire striker on the hammer and added a breech plate with a loading gate. The top of the barrel flat is marked "--ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA--", "COLTS/PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame and "36 CAL" is stamped on the left trigger guard shoulder. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas/ Mexico naval battle scene and stamped "COLTS PATENT No. 376". All metal surfaces are nickel plated. Brass round trigger guard and back strap and brass front bead and notch hammer rear sights. Matching serial number on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap, and "161" on the loading gate. Fitted with smooth one piece walnut grip.

Very fine with 70% frosted original nickel overall. The frame retains almost all of the nickel finish on the right side and has a smooth brown patina on the left side showing a generous amount of nickel finish next to the hammer. The trigger guard and back strap have an aged patina with traces of original darkened silver in protected areas. The frame screws are all replaced. The grip is fine with some finish loss on the right side, some wear on the lower edges and several minor dents on the bottom. The action is fine. The markings and cylinder scene are clear.
