Colt Model 1849 Single Action Pocket Revolver
Included in this lot we have a Colt Model 1849 single action percussion cap pocket revolver chambered in .31 caliber. This is a fine, original example .31 caliber, five-shot revolver that found favor with officers and enlisted men as personal weapons during the Indian Wars of the period. Many of these also saw service in the gold fields of California, the settling West, and in about all urban areas during this very turbulent time of Post-Civil War Reconstruction. The 1849 was one of Colt’s most popular designs that was large enough for aimed fire, but small enough to conceal in a waste band or unobtrusive holster. They also found favor with gamblers and “ladies of the evening.” The revolver displays a 3" barrel, walnut grips, brass trigger guard, six shot cylinder, and warm patina. The top of the barrel is marked with "ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA” in faint faded lettering with only a few letters fully visible. The left side of the frame is marked "COLT’S PATENT” with the cylinder marked with the serial number and a faded etched design. The revolver features nice, overall aged patina metal. Fine walnut grips show only normal light wear. This example also shows a mellow, uncleaned brass back strap and trigger guard. The revolver shows matching serial number across the piece with the cylinder missing the first number. This is one of the most popular and successful of the Colt percussion revolvers and a key model for any Colt or Old West collection. Serial Number: 223587. This firearm qualifies as an Antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
