Colt Model 1849 Pocket percussion revolver, .31 cal., 5 shot, 5” octagon barrel, blue finish, varnished wood grips with inscribed oval silver plaque in left grip “Presented to Lieut. Wm. Adams By the Officers of the 16th Ward, City of Phila. As a token of respect Feby 7th 1855”. This gun is in overall good condition showing an even brown patina over metal surfaces; the cylinder shows much of its scene although there are many scattered nicks and mars on it; a casting flaw on the left side of the loading lever; fair bore, good markings; fair + action, good grips with period accomplished presentation plaque. This lot is accompanied by a letter from the City of Philadelphia dated October 11, 1974 which states that a William Adams was a Lieutenant of Police with an address of Leopard Street above Otter in the years 1855 and 1856, signed by City Archivist Ward J. Childs. Also included is some research concerning a William K. Adams who was with the First Regiment of the North Carolina Infantry during the Civil War but only appears to be the start of pursuing further, the potential later history of Police Lt.
