Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver
This is and exceptional example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver that was manufactured in 1867. The revolver has a blued barrel and five-shot cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer with silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. The one piece walnut grip has a high gloss, 'piano' finish. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the fourth style barrel address: "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in a single line. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" and the left shoulder of the trigger guard is marked: "31 CAL". The full serial number, "298860" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number, "8860". All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 4.0 Inch barrel
Stock:
Gauge: 31 percussion
Finish: blue/case-hardened
Grips: varnished walnut
Serial Number: 298860
Condition: Very fine. The revolver shows only handling and storage wear. The barrel has almost 95% of the original high polish blue finish with minor storage scratches and some traces of wear on the edges and muzzle. The cylinder has 30% blue with the balance of a brown patina. Nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene is present, all of the safety pins are intact and the nipples and rear face of the cylinder show minimal flash pitting. The revolver retains 97% of the original casehardened finish on the loading lever, frame and hammer and the case colors are vivid. The silver-plated finish on the trigger guard and backstrap is nearly all intact, tarnished with a pleasing dark glossy black tone. The screws retain nearly half of the fiery niter blue finish. The grip is excellent and has nearly all of the original varnish finish with only minor handling marks. The action is crisp but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. This is an excellent example of a post-Civil War Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver.
