Colt Mdl SAA Cal .45Colt SN:40011
Colt Single Action Army revolver, .45 Colt cal., 7-1/2" barrel, New York style scroll engraved, nickel plated, double raised carved pearl grips showing steer heads on both sides, serial #40011. The revolver shows 40-60% original nickel that has evenly drifted and toned, some minor erosion and pinprick pitting and good clean metal surfaces. The markings on barrel and patent marks on frame are good, the grips are beautifully carved and fit impeccably and were made for this revolver. The grips are very good+ with a couple of small chips. The action is good, the bore is good, all matching visible serial numbers with correct small parts. Factory letter confirms caliber and nickel finish, shipped to B. Kittredge & Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, August 7, 1879, 50 guns in shipment; barrel length, stocks, and engraving not listed. The engraving is definitely of New York style; we would attribute it to the shop of L. D. Nimschke. Kittredge was Colt's major dealer in the west at this time and had New York contacts for engraving.
