Colt First Model Dragoon percussion revolver, .44 cal., 7-1/2” barrel, grey patina, replaced wood grips, #4951. This gun is in overall fair condition showing a light grey patina over older heavily cleaned metal surfaces with scatteredareas of light pitting and some spots of moderate pitting; the back strap and the wedge appear to be replacement but the frame, barrel assembly, trigger guard and cylinder are correct; the barrel address has been slightly re-freshened some timeago; the action is good, the bore dark and there is no visible cylinder scene; the bottom rear of the barrel assembly shows some loss at the frame pins which is commonly found on heavily used First Models. Only approx. 7,000 First Model Dragoonswere manufactured between 1848 and 1850 beginning at serial number (approx.) 1341; this is a relatively early one with the serial number on the trigger guard split by the front guard securing screw; a scarce large frame early Colt thateasily could have seen service during the Mexican-American War or along the Border fighting renegade Indians or marauding outlaws. Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
