Colt Cop and Thug or New Police .38 caliber center fire single action revolver, nickel plated, hard rubber grips with Cop and Thug scene showing scarce 6” barrel. Factory letter confirms configuration and notes thatit was shipped to Charles H. Turnbull, March 10, 1883, with one gun in shipment. The Turnbull name is well-known in Hartford, CT. and he may have had connections with the Colt factory or Hartford politics. The pistolremains in very good condition with approx. 60-80% original nickel that is evenly drifting and toning and some light pitting and erosion starting in the areas where the nickel is lost. The New Police etching islight but mostly visible. The edges are sharp and the grips are very good + with sharp detail and slight fading. The small parts and screws show bright original fire blue. The markings are good, the action is good and the bore is good. A far above average Cop and Thug with scarce barrel length and researchable history as to one gun shipment denoting special order. Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
