Our Assessment: This U.S. Army Model of 1892 is a first-year of production and saw service with the… U.S. Army! The 1892 was itself a continuation from and refinement of the 1889 Navy revolver. The 1892 would not be the last designation—1894, 1895, 1896, 1901, and 1903 versions would also be produced, each featuring minor upgrades, fixes, or specifications depending on which organization or individual was using it. Teddy Roosevelt carried one at the battle of San Juan Hill; Wells Fargo armed their workers with them; domestic police departments and several South American armies used them. This example is especially noteworthy for still retaining its original grips which feature cartouches, "R.A.C." inspection marks and serial matching on the crane cut, crane, cylinder release and grip frame. Colt collectors love these revolvers and seek them out frequently. This is a quality firearm even after this 130+ years old firearm, with most of its original finish intact. We advise anyone that isn’t a Colt collector to become one, and no doubt this pistol is a great place to start. Good luck in your bidding!

Make: Colt

Model: 1892 New Army

Serial Number: 6848

Year of Manufacture: 1892 (Colt Serial Lookup)

Caliber: .38 Long Colt

Action Type: Double Action SA/DA Revolver with Swing Out Cylinder

Barrel Length: 6"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel above the muzzle. The rear sight is a U-notch grooved into the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth wood. The grips show light nicks, compressions and some minor handling and storage marks. Original cartouches are worn but evidently still present. The grips are in Very Good overall condition, as Antique.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright, the rifling is sharp. There is a bit of persistent fouling but no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion and for the age, this bore rates a 9 or 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows a thin turn line on the cylinder. There are patches of contact and holster wear on leading edges and surfaces. There are light nicks, scuffs and scratches throughout. The screw heads are well-defined. The markings in the metal are clear. The markings in the wood are worn but discernible. Overall, this pistol Very Good condition, as Antique.

Mechanics: The hammer and trigger appear to function correctly. However, the cylinder does not advance in either single or double action. The cylinder locks with light play when the trigger is pressed. We recommend having this revolver serviced by a qualified gunsmith prior to use. We did not fire this firearm. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic's check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with a black soft-sided pistol case, a brown leather "US" marked holster inscribed "ROCK ISLAND / ARSeNAL / 1908 / T.O.C." on the reverse and a Colt letter attesting to this pistol was shipped on Nov 29th 1893 to the "United States Government" as a batch of 600.
