Colt 3rd model Dragoon, .44 caliber percussion, scarce and desirable 8” barrel. Old restored blue finish, wood grips, serial #16949. There is a large “S” stamped beneath the serial number which possibly is the markings for Sedgley of Philadelphia, who were gunsmiths that restored Colts in the pre-war era. The barrel shows 80-90% of a restored blue finish with some scratches and marks at the edges, some flaking at the muzzle. The cylinder shows 80-90% cylinder scene, good sharp Ornsby and patent markings, just light polishing when restored. The frame, hammer, and loading lever show grey case hardening, that has been knocked back or aged. The wood grips show a large US marking and some marks on the butt. The frame shows Colt patent and US marking. The numbers have been restamped. The action is good, the interior is good. Unfortunately many arms collectors had their Colts restored in the prewar era, and that is the case with this scarce 8”. Est: $2,500 - $5,000
