Colt 3rd Model Dragoon and Holster, belonging to Richard Corey Vinson of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois Volunteers, #18091, .44 cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, smooth walnut grips, silver-plated backstrap and triggerguard, all matching visible serial numbers including wedge, and originally mfg'd in 1859, along with a pre-Civil War U.S. Arsenal holster. This pistol, by family tradition, was obtained from a captured Confederate officer by Cpl. Richard Corey Vinson of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, who brought the gun home when he was on leave. Cpt. Vinson fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, was mortally wounded on July 6, 1863, and died the following day, buried at Antietam National Cemetery. The signed afidavit furth states that this revolver was at one time in the possession of Cpt. Vinson's great-nephew, who remembers it being around the house since he was a small boy in the 1930s. Included with this item is its original holster, now missing flap, a brief family history where Vinson is mentioned as having been killed in action with the Union Army in the Civil War, photos from the Gettysburg National Battlefield and the Antietam National Cemetery, as well as a rebound copy of ''The History of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois Volunteers During the Great Rebellion'', printed in Aurora, IL., in 1868, where he is mentioned in several places. Condition is good to very good retaining little original finish, with most of the iron parts having gone a silvery gray. Silver plating to triggerguard shows traces in protected area and near serial number. Action is good, bore is fair. An interesting Dragoon with great Civil War history. Est.: $12,000-$18,000.
