Colt 1878 Exposed Hammer 12 ga Shotgun - RARE

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun,
manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1887. The Model 1878 was made from
1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured.
These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed
closely with high-end Parkers.
The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the
finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made.

The Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was
available in almost any grade as a special-order item.
This double trigger shotgun is a 12-gauge solid rib with 30-inch barrels.

Overall condition is good with beautiful aged patina. No cracks but the usual dents
and scratches of a gun this old. The forearm has some minor wood loss along the
top edge on left side.

The metal parts condition is good+. Has same polished look patina throughout.
The bores are bright. The actions are both excellent.

Stamping on top of barrel is COLTS PT F.A. MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA along centre
rib. On each side of receiver just COLT - On lower tang is serial number 20695.
Nice engraving with picture of a Dog and Birds on the other side - Nice delicate
engraving on all surfaces appears to put this gun at a Grade 4 finish level.

Butt plate is embossed Colt rearing horse logo and all original

A very collectible shotgun.

The 1878 was made in 10 and 12 gauge, and with barrels of 28-32 inches, and with
browned or blued Damascus steel.
NOTE that these guns were made for black powder, and should NEVER be fired
with any modern shotgun shells.
