Colt 1872 open-top revolver, .44 caliber rimfire, 7-1/2” barrel, army size straps, fully and finely New York style engraved with raised carved ivory grips showing Mexican snake and eagle, serial number “2327”. This stunning 1872 Colt shows deluxe and fancy original to the 19th century scrolls attributed to Louis D. Nimschke or his shop. The Colt retains 80-90% original nickel that is unpolished and a nice soft original satin color. The cylinder, hammer, and ejector rod housing have been professionally re-gilted and 95% of this correct color gold remains and is virtually undetectable. The Colt shows magnificent raised carved ivory grips with high relief, carved Mexican snake and eagle on left accented by broad checkered remaining ivory surfaces. The grips are original to the period and a close fit but possibly from another Colt. The action is crisp, bore shiny, and generally sharp overall with some screw fired to bring out the blue. Only approx twenty original engraved open-tops are known to collectors and this one is impressive. Est: $37,500 - $75,000
