Antique Colt Model 1861 Navy Factory Altered to Metallic Cartridge Revolver, #4602, .38 CF cal., blued 7.5'' round ''streamlined'' barrel is marked with the maker's name and address in 1-line on top, ''R.W.M.(anchor)'' underneath, and fitted with a right-side ejector rod; blued 6-shot round cylinder has the rolled naval battle scene and is marked ''Colt's Patent No. 59119/4315''; case hardened steel frame has the two-line 1871-72 patent dates at left side (stamped over the original ''Colt's/Patent'' marking), a rear conversion ring with hinged loading gate (batch marked ''602''), and marked ''C'' inside the hammer channel; brass grip straps (marked ''36 Cal'' on left trigger guard bolster); one-piece oil-finished walnut grips. Mixed serial numbers, with ''4602'' stamped adjacent to some originals. Condition is near fine as configured. Barrel retains approx. 25% blue, mainly in protected areas; cylinder shows all of its original rolled scene and an overall gunmetal gray; frame, conversion plate and hammer retain mottled-to-bright case colors, trigger with bright fire-blue; brass shows light toning. Grips are sound, smooth and retain much varnish. Action is crisp; bore is clean and bright with scattered light etching and sharp rifling. This pistol bears many traits of the U.S. Navy alterations, but lacks the ''USN'' backstrap marking and military inspector's grip cartouche. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
