Colt 1860 Army Richards Mason style conversion to .44 center-fire with 12 notch cylinder, period grapevine style scroll engraving, well-made ivory grips, serial number 179621 (In a range that may letter). The metal surfaces show a gray to brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate erosion and surface pitting. The conversion is somewhat crude and probably by a frontier gunsmith or blacksmith. The ivory grips are old but do not fit well and show a nice yellow patina and may be off of another Colt Army. There has been a repair to the 12 notch cylinder area which is neatly done. The loading gate latch is missing. There is some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting but the barrel address and Colt patent are mostly legible with about 30% to 50% light scene remaining. The barrel has been setback slightly upon the frame and is all matching other than the conversion cylinder. The wedge and several screws are replaced. Authentic engraved conversions are quite rare and this one probably went south to Mexico and was restored by an early collector long ago. Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
