Colt 1855 model Root, 3rd variation, .28 caliber, fluted cylinder, blued finish in original case. Serial number “29259”. The Root remains in original near fine condition with approx. 80-90% original bright blue, just starting to tone, with some minor erosion and pinprick pitting, mostly on the left top of the barrel. The backstrap shows many small dings and mars from removal of cylinder pin, but generally crisp with sharp barrel address and strong traces of case hardening going to silver on hammer and lever. The varnish wood grips are very good plus with 75-85% varnish, some scratches, mars, and losses at the edges. The original to the period burgundy-colored velvetine-lined partition style case remains in good to very good condition with some loosening and partitions, some minor tattering, but lining is generally good to very good overall and would improve with TLC. The case contains a eagle flask in fair condition with some dents and cleaning, a nipple wrench, and cap tin. No bullet mold. The case is missing the left top joint and hasp. Otherwise, the case is good with some small scratches and normal aging. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
