Colt 1851 Navy revolver, original donut scroll engraved, blue and case hardened finish, select burl walnut grips, serial #8816, formerly in the Jerry Berger collection, sold by Christies New York,1980’s, item #395. A fully detailed letter of appraisal by R. L. Wilson describes and details this unusual early engraving and concludes that the engraving was similar to that on Dragoons and that it is an extremelyrare variation that is completely original other than slight coloring on the cylinder. The barrel retains 50-70% original blue on cylinder, evenly drifting and toning to a pleasing with sharp edges and crisp barreladdress. The frame shows Colts Patent in a banner with 40-60% case hardening that is drifting to grey, some light colors mixed in on the recoil shields and on hammer. The backstrap and triggerguard show most of their darkened original silver plate, select varnish burl wood grips are fine to near excellent with just a few minor scratches and slight mars, approx. 90% varnish.
