Colt 1851 Navy revolver, .36 caliber percussion, 7-1/2” barrel, 3rd model, #110769. Grey brown patina finish, varnish wood grips. With note found under grips, which reads “The way to the lode of Chicago ____/ Is on the other side of this sheet”. Opposite side shows a small map with picture of express box (or treasure chest) under illustrations labeled “oak grove”, “large rock”, etc. The note is on old paper and detailed in a fountain pen. One of Mr. Coulter’s favorite guns the intrigue and romance of finding the note under the grips spoke to him and with decades of studying this note he came to no conclusion as to its location. The pistol shows a London barrel address with no proofs. Some light to moderate scattered erosion and surface pitting. Good markings, fairly good edges. Traces of case hardening within the patina. The cylinder shows 10% plus cylinder scene with engagement dates mostly legible on the edge. The straps show a nice patina. The grips are good with some small losses at the toes and some marks on bottom and butt from tacking. All matching visible serial numbers. Good action, good bore, good overall. An intriguing Colt.
