Early Colt single action percussion revolver manufactured 1854. Features one piece walnut grip, 7.5" octagon barrel, brass cone front sight, "V" notch rear sight on hammer nose, 6 shot unfluted cylinder with naval battle scene and "Engaged 16 May 1843". (Second Battle of Campeche). Top barrel flat marked "Address. Col. Colt. London". Left frame marked "Colts Patent" . The serial number is matched on the frame, triggerguard, grip strap, wedge, cylinder, loading lever and the cylinder spindle (also called the arbor pin). There is a small "P" stamped on the rear of the cylinder, "7" on the butt, "W' and "R" on the face of the recoil shield and "J" and "*" on the cylinder face. ( Sub-Inspection Letters ?) The revolver lacks any British proofs. A London Address Colt 1851 Navy revolver without British proofs is extremely rare, as the proofs were a legal requirement in London. Such a firearm would likely be a New York-produced revolver imported for the UK market without the necessary final inspection or simply a gun that never saw final inspection before export to another territory, such as Canada. Another explanation is Around 25,540 were contracted by the British Board of Ordnance for the Crimean war (1853-56) and some were rushed to to the war without proof testing. The bore is fair to good, bright, strong rifling with some areas of scattered light pitting, the revolver is the white, has been cleaned at some point, all the marking are crisp/clear, the grips id very good, has been varnished, the action works well. The two rear grip frame screws and one of the loading lever screws appear to be new replacements. An interesting revolver with a story to tell.
NRA Condition-Very Good. Antique Firearm.
