Colorado Silver Pendant. Georgetown, ca. 1945. Small si
Colorado Silver Pendant. Georgetown, ca. 1945. Small silver fob or pendant, shaped in the oblique view of a silver ingot, with a view of a steep walled canyon emblematic of the Clear Creek canyon near Georgetown. The term "30,000,000" is engraved on one side, representing silver production, a figure exactly matching that published by Vanderwilt in Mineral Resources of Colorado, 1947 (p. 303). This piece probably dates from 1940-1950, and is very rare. There is no maker's mark on the back.
Silver was discovered at Georgetown in the early 1860's. The mines and prospects were located high in the steep-walled Clear Creek canyon at an elevation approaching 10,000 feet. Mining here suffered because of the severe winter conditions, until 1869, when tram systems began to be developed to haul ore to the mills on the canyon floor. Today Georgetown is a wonderful Colorado Rockies Victorian village, allowing for year-round mining. This ingot commemorates the rich Georgetown silver mining history.
From The Kagin Reference Collection of Frontier Ingots.
