Hard-Cover book, measures 9" x 11 .5" x 2". Government printed in 1861. A compilation of reports from the early exploration of the Colorado River, starting in 1857 by 1st Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives, and A.A. Humphreys, Captain of Topographical Engineers. The book is divided into specific Reports, from General to Hydrographic and Geologic through Botany and Zoology. There are also Appendices about Astronomical Observations, Lists of Camps, with Distances, Latitudes and Longitudes, Altitudes, etc. There is an inscription on the inside front cover (detached) that reads "Presented to the Society of California Pioneers by M.D. Fairchild," and a larger inscription reading "To M.D. Fairchild of the Reese River Reveille from D.R. Ashley" There is a fold-out map inside the front cover also. There are numerous black ink and color drawings inside, some full-page size. Very detailed history. The Hydrographic Report (for example) begins in the Gulf of California and the Mouth of the Colorado, and traces back to the Black "Can'on" (Canyon) where boat passage became prohibitive. Mahlon D. Fairchild was one of the first to start the El Dorado Mining District in 1859 along the Colorado River. This area was Arizona up to 1867, which is now Nelson, NV. Except for the Cover, in good to very good condition. Rare. -59462
