Dies:as illustrated above; designed by Charles Barber. Nearly cameo-like in appearance, this lustrous gem Proof is one of 250 such pieces struck in silver for the Pike’s Peak celebrations in 1906, of which the majority were looped. The obverse high relief portrait of Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) is faintly frosted and the brilliant silver center of this gem is surrounded by a halo of soft golden toning, a theme that repeats itself on the reverse. This is the finest example of the variety certified by NGC. Zebulon Pike first saw the now-famed peak named after him in 1806 while exploring the western portion of the country that stretched beyond the boundaries of the recent Louisiana Purchase. His young life was cut short during the War of 1812; he died on the field at the Battle of York (Toronto) in 1813 during a much-needed American victory. [600-800] NGC Census: 1; none finer within any designation.
