a 16” x 12” lithograph framed with patriotic vignettes filled out in manuscript to John W. Rowe, age 19, of Wautoma, Wisconsin.

Rowe enlisted in Company I, 7th Wisconsin, soon to be the famous Iron Brigade in August 1861, and mustered out unscathed in July 1865. The diploma bears an early 1862 Entered According to Act of Congress date, lithographed by Sage, Sons & Co., Buffalo, N.Y. The Memoranda is signed by Company I. Captain Joseph N.P. Bird with the notation, A good and brave soldier.

Captain Bird, whose uniform and accoutrements reside in a Wisconsin Museum, was wounded at Gainesville on August 28, 1862 and mustered out in September 1864. The lithograph is housed in its original heavily varnished hardwood frame now with age crackling.

Condition: Lithograph with slight foxing aged to brownish-cream color, no tears or damage with vibrant colors, VG. Frame loose, glass replaced.
