Color lithograph "Partie" (Party) showing a lady in a party dress, with a suitor at each side. Paul Gavarni was the pseudonym of Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier (1804-1866), one of the greatest social commentators and satirical artists of 19th Century France. He started out as a fashion designer and illustrator and was known as "the most elegant man in France." In the 1830's he began publishing scenes of French society and everyday life which earned him the praise of Balzac and made him famous beyond France. Gavarni is known to show his female subjects, as in this lithograph, with downcast eyes or their heads turned away from the viewer. The text printed on the page reads as follows: "Gavarni, Partie - Lith de Bernard et Frey." One of a pair of lithographs listed separately, the other one is entitled "Le Dimanche" (Sunday) and shows the same lady kneeling in a church. Date of manufacture unknown, possibly late 1800's. In good used condition with toning consistent with age, as shown. Can be shipped framed, as is, or unframed to minimize shipping costs. Please ask questions, request additional photos and shipping costs before buying.

Measurements: Frame: 11 1/2 by 14"; Image: 6 3/8 x 5" approximately.
