<B>[Colonial Americana] William Greene Manuscript Document Signed</B></I> "<I>W. Greene</B></I>". One page, 12.5" x 7.5", Colony of Rhode Island, May 10, 1748. A military commission appointing William Brown a "<I>...lieutenant colonel of the Regiment of Militia in the County of Providence and Town of Warren in this Colony...</B></I>", obliging him "<I>...in the Case of any Invasion or Assault of a Common Enemy to Infest and Disturb these his Majesty's Plantations" to 'Alarm and Gather together the Regiment under your Command.'...</B></I>" Countersigned by Thomas Ward as secretary of state. William Greene served four intermittent terms as colonial governor of Rhode Island between 1743 and 1758. His son, of the same name, would serve as the second governor of the state of Rhode Island. The document is in fine condition with some light stains and old paper reinforcements on verso.
