Colonial Native American Silver Shirt Brooch. Circa 1680, this handmade Native American decorative shirt brooch is crafted from trade silver. With an intricate 16-point star design, this is a very early style. It measures 2.75" in circumference. The silver metal is nicely aged with a rich gray to charcoal patina, with some attractive lighter silver highlights. These decorative, large brooches were often traded to American Indians for handicrafts, blankets, and beadwork. In wonderful, original condition, having the pinback attached and in place. Very similar in design to other examples that are illustrated in the major reference work, Silver In the Fur Trade 1680-1820 by Martha Hamilton. A museum quality example of early Native American decorative silver.
