Colonial Documents 1729-32 Doctor H-J de la Croix, Quebec City.
This lot consist of 3 documents; all related to the doctor and facilitated his arrival in Canada between 1731-1732.
Document #1 is a certificate from Rome, dated 1729, confirming that Hubert Joseph de la Croix is known and certified a Catholic from liege.
The document has the signatures of 12 witness and the seal of Clement XI. This document was printed in Rome on vellum. Due to wear, the document (232mm X 187mm) has been reinforced with tape.
Document #2 is a printed certificate from the Burgermeister of Liege, Flanders (now Belgium) dated March 29, 1731, confirming that Hubert Joseph de la Croix is a resident in good standing in that city. The document is 263mm X 162mm, of a heavy paper and has embossed seal of an angel striking an animal with a sword. The document is folded 3 times and reinforced with tape. On the exterior side of the document, you have 3 lines: “Certificat à Ht. Jos. de la Croix 29 mars 1731” and underlined.
Document #3 is a printed document on linen paper with the city of Amsterdam watermark (410mm X 320mm) which is a passport issued by Marie-Elisabeth, daughter of Leopold 1st of Austria, who was the princess of Flanders. This document has also been reinforced with tape and has the seal of Leopold 1st Holy Roman Empire. The dictionary of Canadian Biography lists Hubert Joseph de la Croix marrying a Quebec girl on February 4, 1732, and lived in Montmagny in 1735. He went on to be a doctor at hotel Dieu in Québec city. His main claim to fame was his interest in botany and the sending of specimens to the Jardin du Roi in Paris. He died in 1760 in Beaumont, Quebec.
