Colonial Document 1840 Canada Addressed to Downing Street
Canada. Dated: September 9, 1840. Addressed to: Unknown (most likely the Prime Minister of England), Issued by: J. Russell. A 6 page (12-1/2 inches x 8 inches) hand-written document addressed to Downing Street, London, England dated September 9, 1840, signed by I. Russell, the Secretary of Lord Sydenham, Charles Poulett Thomson, Governor General of Canada, on the need to establish a Battalion of Canada, a copy of the letter from !st Baron, Raglan, Fitz-Roy Somerset ( famous for the Charge of the Light Brigade ), the recommendations of the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Richard Jackson on the infrastructure of what will become the Royal Canadian Regiment instituted by the Militia Act of 1855 and established in 1883. The document is written of paper supplied by the Rolland Paper Company of St.Jerome, Quebec and has the Canadian Linen Ledger water mark. The paper is in excellent condition, some discolouring but no rips or tears. It was folded 3 times and clamped on the top left-hand corner. Estimated value: $500.00
