May 3, 1779 Large Format Size Virginia Fifty Dollar Note
Treasury of Virginia. May 3, 1779. Fifty Dollars (Fifteen Pounds). Large Format Size. About Extremely Fine.
Fr. VA-169. This higher quality Revolutionary War large size format note measures 3.75” x 5.5” and is double denominated in both Dollars and Pounds. There is deft repair to the centerfold and horizontal edge splits and traces of an old reinforcement strip removed from along the blank reverse centerfold. Three signatories include; Edward Archer, H. Cocke and James Cocke, all sign clearly in brown ink. This Fifty Dollars denomination is the second highest value on this 1779 issue. This current example looks similar in quality to the Newman plate illustration on page 451, listed there having no price in Extremely Fine quality as it is rare. One added feature to this note is an interesting printing “Error” corner fold-over at the lower right.
